Reece Doonan Tells us About His Success

Tuesday, September 12 2017

Reece Jordan Doonan

Level 3 BTEC Health & Social Care (Extended Diploma), went onto study BSc Honours Degree in Pre-Registration Nursing (Adult).

Read what Reece has to say about West Lancashire College, what he did after his time here and what his future holds!

'I have always had a clear career ambition to be a nurse. During Year 11 I attended a West Lancashire Open Day, where I spoke with college tutors, Sharon and David in the Health and Social Care department. They made me feel instantly comfortable and welcomed me. I didn’t have the best GCSE’s but they encouraged me and reassured me, it just felt like the right College for me and I really looked forward to starting in September 2012.

I commenced the Level 3 BTEC in Health and Social Care (Extended Diploma). This course was ideal for me as it is 3 A Level equivalent courses, which allowed me to progress onto university.

Alongside my course, I was actively involved in a government youth organisation, The National Citizen Service (NCS); which I had previously completed in the summer of 2012, I was given the opportunity to represent the North West division as a Graduate Ambassador and went onto meeting government officials & the prime minister at Downing Street. I was given many opportunities to talk and meet with government ministers and share thoughts and opinions to do with youth work within the region but also nationally. Although these extracurricular activities may have been on my own behalf, my college lectures fully supported and encouraged me to get involved and I would like to take this opportunity to thank them personally. They made my time at West Lancs College extremely enjoyable and really encouraged me to do the best I possibly could.  I completed the BTEC programme, my overall grade of triple D* D* D*! This was a fantastic outcome and the best grades that could be achieved on an Extended Diploma programme. I was able to go onto studying BSc Hons Degree in Adult Nursing at the University of Central Lancashire (UCLan).

West Lancashire College gave me so much support, help and guidance to help me complete my UCAS application and assistance with interview techniques. This really helped in making the best impression at my interviews for university as nerves where building and I didn’t know what to expect.

I never thought I’d get to university. I have now completed my three year degree at UCLan and have achieved a First Class Honours Degree in Adult Nursing. I am absolutely over the moon to have achieved such an accolade. The encouraging support and nature of the college helped, supported and guided me to achieving my dream job. Whilst at UCLan, I became the School President for the School of Nursing for two years. This senior role allowed me to be an advocate for all student nurses at the university and enhance student quality/experience on the course, meeting with senior academics to create positive change.

I am now proud to say, I have qualified as a nurse working in South London at St George’s University Hospital in Major Trauma Orthopaedics. You might recognise the name of the hospital, as it’s the same hospital that appears on the Channel 4 programme, 24 Hours in A&E!'

Congrats Reece! Stay in touch with us!! :)
