Carpentry & Joinery Diploma Level 2 (City & Guilds) Full Time

Course Overview

This qualification is aimed at learners who work or want to work in the construction industry and specialise in working with wood. There are four trade areas available: site carpentry, bench joinery, shop fitting joinery, and wood machining. Our qualifications are aimed at people wishing to learn some skills in carpentry and joinery, to progress on to becoming skilled in their chosen trade, or to progress through an apprenticeship and work towards becoming a master craftsman.

This course is part of the standard level 1 route to a career in construction.

Successful students tend to:
• have practical skills and good hand skills 
• be able to follow technical drawings, building plans, and other instructions 
• be fit and strong enough to carry tools and materials
• have good communication skills
• be able to work quickly and neatly
• enjoy working with others.

Course Content

Much of the coursework is practical, working in the Carpentry & Joinery department to become a competent Joiner. Theory is covered in order to assist and support the practical work. Flexible learning techniques are used to deliver theory, which include learning packages, group work, projects/assignments, demonstrations and videos.

Areas covered include:

> Health, Safety and Welfare in construction and associated industries
> Understanding information, quantities and communication with others
> Understanding construction technology
> Prepare and use carpentry and joinery portable power tools
> Carry out first fixing operations
> Carry out second fixing operations
> Carry out structural carcassing
> Carry out maintenance to non-structural carpentry work.

Hi-Viz vest will be supplied by the college.

Hi-Viz vest and ID badges must be worn at all times.

Entry Requirements

4 GCSEs at Grade A*-D (Grade 3-9) or equivalent at pass level or recognised Level 1 qualification in Carpentry and Joinery.

19+ Learners relevant work/life experience (confirmed at interview).

Learning & Assessment Methods

• Assessment is via multiple choice examination and practical tests
• Awarding body phase test
• Portfolio of knowledge.

Qualifications Gained

On completion of the course students will have gained a Level 2 Diploma in Carpentry & Joinery.

Progression Opportunities

Successful students may progress onto the Level 3 Diploma in Carpentry & Joinery.

Career Opportunities

This course is designed to open up the world of Construction to students either as a continuing student or potentially as an employed trainee. Career progression opportunities include:

> Shop Fitting
> Self Employment.
