Plumbing Level 2 (City & Guilds)

Course Overview

Start your career in plumbing - learn how to deal with leaky pipes, water systems and drainage. A qualification in Plumbing will help you learn the trade and progress onto an NVQ. These qualifications are intended for those wanting to gain the skills and knowledge necessary to enter the plumbing industry. At Level 2, this consists of a basic understanding, whilst the Level 3 Diploma equips learners with advanced plumbing knowledge and skills

This course is part of the standard level 2 route to a career in construction.

Who the course is for:

This course is for school leavers and adults interested in a career in construction (Plumbing).

Successful students tend to:
• have practical skills and good hand skills
• be able to follow technical drawings, building plans, and other instructions
• be fit and strong enough to carry tools and materials
• have good communication skills
• be able to work quickly and neatly
• enjoy working with others.

Course Content

Much of the coursework is practical, working in the Plumbing department to become a competent Plumber. Theory is covered in order to assist and support the practical work. Flexible learning techniques are used to deliver theory, which include learning packages, group work, projects/assignments, demonstrations and videos.

Areas covered include:

Level 2 Studies in Plumbing.

Unit 201/501 Health and safety in building services engineering 
Unit 202/502 Electrical principles and processes for building services engineering
Unit 203 Scientific principles for domestic, industrial and commercial plumbing 
Unit 204/504 Common plumbing processes 
Unit 205/505 Cold water systems 
Unit 206/506 Domestic hot water systems 
Unit 207 Sanitation 
Unit 208/508 Central heating systems 
Unit 209/509 Drainage systems
Unit 210 Understand how to communicate with others within building services engineering.

Course Requirements:

• All students must purchase the relevant kit prior to starting the course. Costs will be discussed at the enrolment and during the college induction.
• Hi – vis vest will be supplied by the college.
• Hi – vis vest and ID badges must be worn at all times.

Student Experience
• Specialist training from industry experts and suppliers including: Sentinel Products, Mira Showers, Myson, Salamander Pumps, McAlpine, Wavin
• Trips and visits the PHEX Manchester and Go karting
• Specialist equipment including; Hydraulic steel benders, gas torches, hand banding/copper bending machines, simulated rooms for practical works
• Skills competitions including World Skills UK
• Progression to Apprenticeships

Entry Requirements

  • 4 GCSEs at Grade A*-D (Grade 3-9) or equivalent at pass level including English and/or Maths.

Maths and English will be part of your programme of study is not already achieved a Grade C/4.

Learning & Assessment Methods

  • Assessment is an online core unit examination
  • Awarding body phase tests
  • Portfolio of knowledge
  • Online examination.

Qualifications Gained

On completion of the course students will have gained a Level 2 qualification in Plumbing.

Progression Opportunities

Successful completion of the course,  may allow you direct access into level 3 Plumbing City & Guilds.

Career Opportunities

This course is designed to open up the world of Construction to students either as a continuing student or potentially as an employed trainee. Career progression opportunities include:

• Labouring
• Plumbing apprenticship
• Foreperson
• Plumbers merchants
• Site management
